Welcome to Brynsaar!
Thank you for joining us in the exciting world of Brynsaar! The builders, scripters, writers, and DM's have put a lot of work into creating this world, for your enjoyment and for ours. In order to maintain some level of peace and harmony in these fine lands, there are certain rules that you, as a citizen of Brynsaar, must agree to follow.
THE RULES OF BRYNSAAR
Please Note: If a Player is found in violation of the rules, the Dungeon Master (DM), Moderator, or Administrator will issue a warning twice (except where otherwise noted) - if a Player fails to respond, the DM, Moderator, or Administrator will be forced to assume that the Player refuses to cooperate. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action, up to but not excluding a ban if it's deemed necessary.
The All-Encompassing "Final" Rule
Even though this is called the "Final" rule, because of its importance it is listed first.
1.) Ignorance of the rules is no excuse.
As the community of Brynsaar changes and grows, it may become necessary to make changes to the rules, both for the community boards and to the server. Players will be notified via the boards of any such changes (under the "Announcements" section).
Ignorance of the rules is no excuse for breaking the rules. As a member of the Brynsaar community, it is your responsibility to check with the "Announcements" section of the board for any updates and/or changes to the rules.

Part I
Player Accounts and Access to the Brynsaar Server
1. Access to the Brynsaar Server Must be Approved.
As a Role Play server, Brynsaar welcomes all avid role players. However, in order to maintain a quality role play environment, we have had to resort to both a password on the server and a screening process.
All players wishing to join the world of Brynsaar are asked to please PM an application for their proposed character to the Administrators for review. Your application must include the following information:
- Character Name:
- GameSpy ID:
- Forum Name:
- Time Zone:
- Race:
- Alignment:
- Proposed Class(es):
- Deity:
- Brief Character History:
- Brief Description of Character Personality:
- Proposed Character Goals:
NOTE: To help Admins sort through applications quickly, please title your PM with your proposed character's name. Thank you.
By submitting an application you acknowledge that you have read and understood all the rules of Brynsaar. PLEASE NOTE: You will need to submit a separate application for each character you wish to play in Brynsaar.
Upon review and approval, the current password will be PM'd back to
you. Please send character applications to: Gorzy. Only
one character per application please. Please allow at least 7 days for approval. Most are approved within a few hours.
In order to ensure that all your hard work for your character is properly
saved, please make sure to obtain approval for your character from the Admin
staff before playing on Brynsaar. Unauthorized Characters may find that their
data is not saved by the server database, or that their character data has
been wiped from the database during clean-up. The Administrators and DM staff
take no responsibility for unauthorized Characters in Brynsaar. Unapproved
Characters in the world of Brynsaar play at their own risk.
Part II
Character Creation and Restrictions
1.) Character Names on the Server Must Be Role Play Names Only.
- There will be no character names in tard, no names in dewd, no names
in leet speak, no names with a strange combination of symbols (i.e. #*@&$#@
or a bunch of spaces), and no names with alternating caps (example: IaMaDuMbIdIoTsOi
DoStuFfLiKeThIs) allowed on the Brynsaar server.
You are allowed to use one "~" before and after your character name, for example: "~Lycius Hawkblayde~". Names using multiple special characters like "-=< Eve Swiftarrow >=-" will not be allowed.
Using colors in character names is not allowed.
Any characters found with names of this nature will be warned once, after which the character in question will be deleted from the database. No exceptions.
- No character names of famous people, well known mythological gods,
or well known fictional characters from print, comics, and/or games (i.e.
Musashi, Richard Simmons, Zeus, Thor, Cu Culain, Dritzz do'Urden, Frodo Baggins,
Cloud Strife, Richard Cipher/Rahl, Son Goku, etc).
Names loosely based on famous characters or people might be allowed, within reason. Such names will be reviewed by DM's and Administrators on a case-by-case basis. Remember - each character MUST be approved by the Admins. If you deviate from the character's name from your application, your character will not be backed up by the Brynsaar database.
Titles (such as King, Queen, Duke, Lord, Sir, etc. etc.) are not allowed as part of a player character's name. Courtly titles are reserved for NPC's (including designated Key Players).
Some titles, like knightly honors (such as Sir/Dame, Lord/Lady) can be awarded to a character through role play, but are not considered part of your character's given name.
Names consisting entirely of titles or epithets, (e.g. "The Shadowy
Lady") are not allowed.
Please keep in mind that offensive names will not be allowed in the world of Brynsaar. Brynsaar is intended for players of all ages and backgrounds. Names that contain racial slurs, sexual references, or other offensive material are not allowed. This applies to Player Account Names and Character Names on the server, and names used by players on the Brynsaar community message boards.
PLEASE NOTE: offensiveness will be judged by DM's and Administrators on a case by case basis. If a DM, Moderator, or Administrator finds your character name offensive, you will be asked to re-roll a new character, or start up a new message board account.
4.) Unique Items Are Restricted to a Single Character Only
All artifact-level items in Brynsaar are unique, and are meant to be possessed by one character, and one character ONLY. Brynsaar administrators will be keeping a record of all artifact items and their current wielders/possessors. Any artifact found in the possession of another character will be immediately confiscated, and disciplinary action will be taken.
PLEASE NOTE: Unique items are meant for a single CHARACTER, not a single player. A player should not pass unique items to alternate characters on the same account - this still qualifies as "giving" the item away to another, and as such the DM has full rights to confiscate it.
5.) Chaotic Evil Player Characters are NOT Allowed in Brynsaar.
Keep in mind that your character's actions can affect his or her alignment standing. Too many dastardly evil acts may cause your alignment to shift towards Chaotic Evil. Any character found to be CE will be barred from the server.
6.) Characters must choose from the alignments allowed by His or Her Chosen God or Godess
There are several gods in Brynsaar for your character to choose from. However, the gods accept the worship only from those who are of like mind and spirit as themselves, and their causes. (See pantheon for accepted alignments)
7.) The following races will be allowed in character creation:
- Human
- Elf (Wood, Gold, Grey)
- Dwarf (Mountain, Hill)
- Halfling
- Half-Whatever (You may be half and half of any allowed race)
- Half-Orc
- Gnome
All other character races are subject to approval by Lycius. Races requiring special approval include Drow, Snow Elf, and Duergar. Please note that Drow and Duergar are not allowed for a player's first character in Brynsaar.
Part III
Class Restrictions
1.) Druid characters of Brynsaar CANNOT use metal armor.
Druids are servants of nature, and as such are restricted to using armor of natural materials, such as leather, animal hide, monster hide, or plant material (tree bark, bamboo, etc.). Armor fashioned from the scales of a dragon are allowable for Druids
2.) Restrictions on Clerics
You must have a deity to be a cleric, and your domains must be chosen from those listed in your deity's description. In addition, certain deities place restrictions on the armor or weapons their clerics may use, as noted in the deity's description.
The Forest Mother does not accept clerics into her service.
3.) Restrictions on Paladins and Blackguards
There are 2 gods who do not accept paladins (or blackguards) into their
service:
- Galthorius (NG), Lord of Righteousness Justice
Those who wish to serve the cause of Good may choose Tothos as their patron.
Blackguards looking for an evil benefactor may choose Ravenor or Morglaive. Madrin accepts
only those champions who pledge themselves first and foremost to Law.
4.) Assassin Characters MUST be of Evil Alignment
Because of the very nature of their chosen occupation, assassin characters can only be of evil alignment. Players found with a non-evil assassin character may be subject to having their character deleted, and may face a CD ban from the server.
5.) Restrictions on Multi-Classed Characters:
Champion of Torm will NOT be allowed EVER, do not ask!
-
Prestige classes: The following prestige classes:
- Dwarven Defender
- Pale Master
- Red Dragon Disciple (Do NOT request to play this class in your application. You will need to ROLEPLAY aquiring this class through InGame means)
- Weapon Master (will be allowed ONLY by approval from Alia or Lycius.)
The remaining prestige classes:
- Arcane Archer
- Assassin
- Blackguard
- Harper Scout
- Shadowdancer
- Shifter
will not be restricted beyond the basic requirements for the class.
- The minimum number of levels for ANY class will be 10.
- If you have 2 classes then you will have 10 levels in each class by 20th level.
- If you have 3 classes then you will have 10 levels in each class by 30th level.
- If your character will have Rogue or Prestige class levels then you will have 10 levels in those classes by 20th level.
- If you will have both Rogue and a Prestige class then you will have until level 25 to have 10 levels in each class.
- Paladins and Monks Cannot Multi-Class.
The path of a paladin is a rigorous one, and does not allow one to dabble into other professions. The same is true for monks, who forsake worldly concerns for the discipline of study and meditation. As such, if a character chooses the path of a paladin or a monk, they CANNOT raise levels for any other class.
An exception to this rule is made in the case of monk characters, who are allowed to take the following prestige classes only: Shadowdancer and Assassin. Note that you must still take all 10 levels in the prestige class, and that assassin characters must be evil (in the case of a monk/assassin, Lawful Evil).
Part IV
Usage of Communication Channels
1.) The Shout Channel is NOT Meant for All Communication
The Shout channel is reserved for the following:
- Server-Wide RP Events
- Looking for a Party to Group with (when first logging in, preferably in
an IC manner)
For all other purposes, please use the Talk, Party, or Tell channels, as appropriate.
2.) No Cursing or Profanity on Open Channels.
While occasionally venting your frustration is only human, please refrain
from cursing or using foul language on open channels. "In character" or
not, cursing on open channels (Shout or Talk) can result in a DM taking disciplinary
action, up to and including banning if it's deemed necessary. If you have
to curse and scream, please do so in Party or Tell. Better yet, yell in real
life, and don't let your fingers do the typing.
The world of Brynsaar is a fantasy-based world. Tard-speak, dude-speak, and leet-speak ARE NOT PERMITTED ON OPEN CHANNELS.
4.) All In-Game Speech in Open Channels Should Be in English (Even bad English is fine as long as you make the attempt)
There are many different languages that exist in the world of Brynsaar. However, while taking part in the world, please be considerate of other players, and try to restrict your open communication channels to English.
Also, when using the DM channel, please use English.
NOTE: this restriction does not include using the in-game language tools to "speak" different languages in the game. Please do not abuse the language tool - they are meant to enhance role play, not cause ill will between players. Thank you.
5.) Please Keep Intimate Roleplay Off This Server.
In game sex or "cybering" WILL NOT take place ANYWHERE on Brynsaar. Not in Tells, Not in Whisper, Not in party, NO Where! IF you need to cyber to have Fun take it to IMs.
BDSM is not allowed.
Any form of IC sex involving child abuse/molestation will be grounds for IMMEDIATE CD Ban.
6.) Please Keep Out-Of-Character (OOC) Speech to a Minimum on the Open Channels
Whenever possible, please keep OOC speech to a minimum. This includes both Talk and Party channels. The suggested method of speaking OOC is through Tells. If you wish to speak OOC in an open channel, we suggest that you preface your OOC statement with either an "OOC" or a "//" mark. Also, please try to keep your OOC statements distinct from your In-Character statements
Example:
Preferred Method:
Player A says: Farewell, friends. I fear I must leave you for now.
Player A says: ooc - yikes, it's past 3am here, I have to log off. cya!
or
Player A says: //yikes, it's past 3am here, I have to log off. cya!
Not Like This:
Player A says: Farewell, friends. I fear I must leave you for now. ooc -
yikes, it's past 3am here, I have to log off. cya!
Part V
Roleplay and Player Conduct
1.) If You Aren't Currently Role Playing, Please Do Not Interfere with Role
Play Sessions.
Role play on Brynsaar is highly encouraged, but we recognize that not all players will want to be involved with all events and storylines. If you do not wish to take part in a role play session, you don't have to - but please, don't ruin a role play event for others.
2.) Disruptive Play Will NOT Be Tolerated
Brynsaar is a collective world, brought together by the dedication and hard work of many different-minded individuals working together, to provide you with a place to adventure and have fun. However, a style of play that involves depriving other players of fun for no other reason but to cause trouble (commonly known as “griefing”) will not be tolerated.
Examples of disruptive play include (but are not restricted to):
- Killing NPC's for no reason (especially merchants, healers, or NPC's
who are key players in quests)
- Exploiting bugs
- Spamming (i.e. sending Tell after Tell to another player asking for gold,
gear, or other aid; needlessly repeating a phrase over and over for no reason;
etc.)
- Harassing other players
- Rape or child sex. If you are caught roleplaying rape or child sex you will be immediately CD banned.
- "Power leveling" weaker players (defined below)
- "Farming" an area for experience points (defined below)
More serious infractions of Griefing, which may result in an immediate ban, include (but are not restricted to):
- Senseless Player Killing
- Using the Pick Pocket skill against a Player
- Using the Disarm skill against a Player
- Purposely and maliciously causing unnecessary lag on the server
- Falsely reporting above rule infractions by another Player
Any Player who engages in disruptive play and refuses to stop when confronted by a DM can and will face disciplinary actions, up to and including CD Banning if deemed appropriate. Each incident will be judged on a case by case basis. If a Player wishes to appeal a banning, please refer to Part 8 - Appealing a DM Ruling or Lodging a Complaint.
Definition of "Power Leveling"
"Power Leveling" is basically defined as a higher level character creating a party with a low level character for the express purpose of providing effortless experience points to the low level character, to level them up faster. This is considered exploiting. Ideally, all members of a hunting party should be at least within 5 levels of each other.
IF there is a valid RP reason for a level 20 and a level 5 to party and hunt then it is allowed. This does not mean the level 20 casts invisibility on the level 5 and he hangs back while the level 20 kills everything. If you are in a party and hunting There will be action from ALL party members. This will of course be exploited but I see no merit in screwing my roleplayers over because of exploiters. If you are caught abusing this you will be dealt with harshly.
Definition of "Farming"
"Farming" is basically defined as clearing an area of monsters over and over again while depriving other players from experiencing the area fully, for the express purpose of gaining experience points, treasure, or gold. This is considered exploitive.
Example: Player A is a 15th level Fighter. He goes to an area where he knows the lay of the land, and has a certain monster that on occasion drops Item X, a quest item that yields a good amount of gold. He kills the monster a few times and collects Item X, meanwhile clearing the area while waiting for the main monster to respawn.
A group of 8th level characters comes into the area, looking to complete the quest by retrieving Item X. At this point, the more powerful Player A should leave the area (leaving Item X to the lower level characters).
If Player A remains in the area and attempts to collect Item X again, when clearly the 8th level characters are attempting to complete the quest, he is considered to be Farming.
Definition of “Twinking”
"Twinking" is basically defined as giving beginning level characters extremely powerful items with the sole purpose being to “power level” them at a faster rate, or providing them with excessive amounts of gold to purchase overpowered equipment for their current level.
While aiding your fellow adventurers in a Role Play fashion is allowed and even encouraged, blatant "twinking" is frowned upon, and may result in DM intervention, if it is deemed necessary by the DM.
Each incident of "Power Leveling," "Farming," and/or "Twinking" will be judged on a case-by-case basis by DM's and Admins. Each incident will be logged and recorded. Repeated offenses may result in appropriate disciplinary actions by DM's. (Please note Rules Section 2, #4, above, regarding unique and named items.)
3.) Concerning Ability Scores
You are expected to roleplay your character in accordance with his or her abilities. A character who has an 8 Intelligence cannot speak clearly beyond grunts and pointing. A 9 Intelligence will allow speech like the common half-orc.
Having a score of 8 in any ability is not disallowed but keep in mind that 10 is considered average, and you must roleplay your abilities. Physical ability scores below 9 are unrestricted because they come with a penalty from the game engine. Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma ARE restricted and to have one of these abilities below 9 REQUIRES approval from Lycius or Alia. This is not debatable and should you ignore this rule your ability scores might be adjusted as a DM sees fit.
4.) Players are Not to be Forced to Participate in Role Play They Do Not WantEach player has their own ideas and concepts of what their characters are.
Some players may not be comfortable with the direction a role play session
goes. If the role play takes on a feel that the player is uncomfortable with
or is disturbed by, then that player is within their rights to excuse themselves
from further participation in that event.
Part VI
Player vs. Player Rules and Restrictions
IMPORTANT NOTE: If a Player is found guilty of violating one of the rules in this section, the DM is authorized to immediately ban the Player. Each incident will be judged on a case by case basis. Players can appeal their cases to the DM Staff Admins for the ban to be lifted. (See Part 8 - Appealing a DM Ruling or Lodging a Complaint). If the DM investigation proves the Player guiltless, the ban will be lifted.
1.) Random and Malicious Player Killing Will NOT be Tolerated, and is Grounds for BanningBrynsaar is a Role Play world, NOT a hunting ground for power-hungry, blood thirsty assassins. While Role Played hostilities between players are allowed, senseless Player Killing (PKing) is strictly prohibited.
If you enjoy hunting and killing other Players for no reason whatsoever, we strongly suggest you choose a different server better suited to your tastes.
2.)Pick Pocket and Disarm are NOT to be Used Against Other Players, and are Grounds for Banning
Robbing fellow players of their possessions has in the past proven to be
more troublesome than RP benefits. Therefore, PP and Disarm can only be used
against computer-generated creatures OR DM-controlled enemies.
Part VII
Brynsaar Community Message Board
We encourage all Brynsaar players to take part on the Brynsaar community message boards. These boards are a vital communication tool between players, DM's, Administrators, builders, and content writers. The message boards are where players will be notified of upcoming DM-run story arcs, server updates, changes to the rules, and other major events. The message boards also provide space for players to share their own stories and histories, create their own character-driven story-arcs, or just chat in a more casual setting.
However, when posting on the Brynsaar community message boards, please keep in mind the following rules:
1.) Please refrain from inappropriate language on the boards.
The Brynsaar boards are provided as a space for communication among members of the Brynsaar community - players, DM's, builders, and administrators.
Not every single post needs to be filled with happiness and love. Not every single post must be strictly concerning role-play, or even Brynsaar. However, please keep in mind that the boards ARE NOT A PLACE TO CURSE, SPEW, VENT, MALICIOUSLY TROLL, ATTACK OR DISPARAGE OTHER COMMUNITIES, OR SPAM.
The Brynsaar boards are offered to promote the building and sharing of the Brynsaar community - to foster a feeling of friendship and camaraderie among Brynsaar players, not bring other communities or individuals down. While the occasional lapse is understandable, please be respectful of other members in the community. Thank you.
2.) The following will not be tolerated on the boards:
- Threats of violence, either In Game or In Real Life (note: this does not
include role play between characters, but in order to avoid confusion and
misunderstandings, please try to keep all role play posts in the role play
areas of the board. Thank you!)
- Sexually explicit links, images, or written material (there are sites
for this kind of stuff - this ISN'T one of them)
- Racist or sexist insults or comments*
- Links, images, or material that are inappropriate and/or offensive*
- Flaming and/or personal attacks on others*
- Harassment of another player or players
- Offensive spam, pointless repetitive babbling and annoying spam, or advertising
spam*
- Continually disruptive behavior*
*Moderators and Administrators will be the final judges of what is considered "offensive." Each incident will be judged on a case by case basis. Violation of the above may result in deletion of the offending posts or in some cases a ban.
3.) Please keep In-Character Role Play in the Role Play forums.
Again, in order to avoid confusion and misunderstandings between players, please keep all Role Play posts in the Role Play areas of the boards.
4.) Please keep Out-Of-Character interactions OUT of the Role Play and Storytelling forums.
In order to keep the In-Character Role Play and Storytelling threads easy to read for involved players, please avoid Out-Of-Character posts in the Role Play sections of the board.
If your character is not involved in the action of a particular role play thread, please do not disrupt the role play for others. To avoid misunderstandings, it is often a good idea to use the board's Personal Message function to check with the originator of a RP thread before jumping into the action. Please keep in mind that disrupting the role play of others on the boards will be considered disruptive behavior.
Also for Storytelling threads, unless the original poster indicates otherwise, please do not add your own commentary or additions. A Storytelling thread is considered the original poster's story - please do not disrupt their story. Again, disrupting someone's personal story in the Storytelling section will be considered disruptive behavior.
Please remember to respect the creativity of your fellow players. Thank you.
NOTE ON BANNING FROM THE BOARD: If you feel you have been banned unfairly,
please contact the Brynsaar Administrators at: Brynsaar_DM@hotmail.com. You
case will be reviewed, and you will be notified if your ban is lifted. Rulings
by the Brynsaar Administrators will be considered final.
NOTE: In order to keep our Database accurate on Number of players and to reduce file size, The Administration, ( Namely Alia, but not limited to her) Will Delete Any Forum Name Account Older than 1 month that Has Zero posts. The Reason being That each person who wishes to be a part of Brynsaar should at least have one post - When they sign the Rules acknowledgement Thread - And if they do not and have been registered for more than a month, then that Forum name account will be Deleted. We'd like to keep an accurate count and not a bloated number. If you would like exception to this rule, PM AliaDesyon concerning the issue.
Part VIII
Appealing a DM Ruling or Lodging a Complaint
Inevitably, there will be times when a player may not agree with a DM’s ruling. There are also times when Players may have disagreements with other Players. After all, no two people always see things in the same light. If this happens, please remember that DM’s and other Players are people too. Pointing fingers and making public accusations will only make problems worse.
If you wish to appeal the DM’s decision, or wish to lodge a complaint about another Player, please follow the procedure outlined below:
Step 1 - Using the NwN TELL or DM Channels
Ask the DM directly through a Tell or using the DM channel in NwN. Please allow the DM time to respond, as it is possible that the DM may already be involved with another matter.
To avoid unnecessary conflict, please DO NOT use the Shout or Talk channels for this purpose.
Step 2 - Using a Personal Message on the Brynsaar Message Board
If you are unable to resolve the issue online, (for example, if the DM is unavailable because of an event, or if the DM has to log off for RL issues), then the issue should be discussed outside the game. Send a Private Message to the DM in question at the Brynsaar message boards.
Step 3 - Appeal or Report the Incident to the DM Admin Staff
If the issue is not resolved at this point, you can send a Private Message, stating all the facts and elements of the affair, to the DM Admin Staff through the Brynsaar message board, to the account: Admin_Staff
Or you can e-mail the DM Admin Staff at: brynsaar_dm@hotmail.com
The DM Admins will discuss the issue, and notify you of their decision.
For each step, please allow at least 48-hours for the DM Staff to respond to your request. Upon receiving your request, the DM Staff will investigate the matter, and should be able to resolve the issue within 7 - 10 days.
It is strongly advised that Players do not vent or spam their complaints
and grievances, either in game or on the message board. Doing so may result
in a temporary ban from the boards.
